Brooke's Story

This is Brooke's story

Friendly and affectionate stray Brooke came into Battersea’s London centre via a private veterinary surgery with her two newborn puppies. A bedraggled Brooke had been found wandering alone in a park, heavily pregnant, limping and in poor condition.

Brooke gave birth at the vet’s surgery and two days later she was brought to Battersea.

On arrival, poor Brooke had lots of matts in her fur, an abscess, and a fractured leg in a splint.

Battersea's expert clinical team leapt into action. Brooke’s matted fur was clipped, her abscess was treated with medication and a series of x-rays of Brooke’s leg were taken. The x-rays confirmed fractures in two bones, which required surgical intervention to give Brooke the best chance of healing properly and going on to live a happy, pain-free life on four legs.

Brooke was whisked into surgery where Battersea’s skilled vets placed a small steel plate and screws into her leg to hold the fractured bones in place and help accelerate healing.

Brave Brooke got through the surgery like a champion, continuing to nurse her puppies, post-operation, even though she was in pain.

In the weeks that followed, Brooke was prescribed a bespoke course of physiotherapy and hydrotherapy treatment in Battersea's own state of the art facility and she and her puppies spent time in a dedicated foster home, so that Brooke could convalesce and raise her family in as calm an environment as possible.

Brooke returned to Battersea at regular intervals for treatment and repeat x-rays to check on the healing progress of her fracture. Brooke’s leg was healing wonderfully, and she was starting to increase time spent on short walks on lead.

Just as things were headed in the right direction, Brooke’s follow up x-rays picked up an area of abnormality, unrelated to her leg injury, in her abdomen. On further examination by Battersea’s vets, the area of concern was found to be three small mammary masses. Courageous Brooke underwent more surgery to remove the masses, which fortunately turned out to be benign.

After a little more recovery time, puppy-free on foster, Brooke was at last ready to find a new home. Her charming, lap dog personality and love of cuddles soon lead her to be matched with a wonderful new family. Brooke has settled in brilliantly and she is now able to enjoy walks on the beach near her new home.
